Welcome to the GreenSoda Project
Soda Hall glows like a 500 kw lightbulb - a little higher in the day and a little lower at night, but not much. Its electric power consumption is about equal to that of all the homes of all the people who work in the building. It is three times the national average for commercial buildings per square foot, and it has been that way for years. The facilities staff do what they can to improve the HVAC system, put in better lights, and so on. But the people who can make the real difference is us. Together we can potentially cut our usage in half by dealing with computers that sit idle, both on the desktop or in the server room, lights that don't need to be on, excessive cooling and heating, and other forms of waste.
This site is intended to help the Soda Hall community work together to make the building as green on the inside as it is on the outside.
Recent News
- Green Windows: Desktop computers consume almost as much sitting idle as they do when fully active. A typical desktop consumes about 10 compact florescent lightbulbs worth of power (200 watts) when active and 8 or 9 when idle. Multiply by 500, as in Soda Hall, and you have a huge waste. But, in standby a computer uses only a couple of watts and it can pop out quickly to resume what you were doing. Our first initiative is to tackle the waste in idle Windows desktops and laptops.
